    Underlining was normal during that era. Only on UA-cam so I hear it called flat lining. It was often found in tailoring to create shape. If a thin cotton achieved the same result in structure, it was used because it was cheaper. Then comes the lining. Historical accuracy is nice and something to aim for but not possible, unless the fabric is made exactly like back then, using the same species of plants and animals to begin with. Chances of that happening are nil. Factor in machine sewing and historical accuracy really goes out the window. I love to mix period with contemporary clothing while giving off the Goth vibe. Mix that with budgetary restraints that most normal mortals don't ever face, it is a challenge. Toss in capsule and it gets fun as the pieces have to do double to quadruple duty as professional work wear, Goth, casual, business casual and we'll just fun. The accessories are the trick... Eventually I will no longer be on disability and go back to work. 😊

    Thank you for great instructions. My Elna air, keeps jamming, but also stitches are bunched up. What is the standard stitch length for sewing? Perhaps my tensions are wrong..🙈

    • @thetailorette
      @thetailorette 23 дні тому

      @@martinedann7025 your tension could be wrong if you notice one side of the fabric has loose or tight stitches. I should make a video on tension… makes a world of difference! It’s possible you may have some threads that have not been removed properly too.

      That is 100% your sewing machine. New singer sewing machines are known for jamming up. I’ve never sewn one straight line on a new singer without jamming. Don’t let this make you give up on sewing!

    It was good the serger did that ruffle for you! Before seeing that, I watched some videos of you doing the baste lines and gathering them and I wondered why you wouldn't use a shirring foot attachment or even a ruffler attachment...so much faster. The stitch length and tension dictact the ratio on shirring foot and the ruffle attachment is adjustable as well. ( to make the process a bit faster, maybe you cut more ruffle longer and cut off access , that way you don't have to figure the ration precisely. The other thing that strikes me, is it may be simpler to add the ruffle before the pleating and waist band beings you have the length all figured out. ( of course, I have never made dresses like these, but I have sewn hundreds of yards of ruffles for home decor.)

      I take my waist measurement and divide it by however my box pleats I want. Let’s say I want six box pleats in my skirt and I have a 36” waist. That would mean I make each box pleats 6” finished. Hope that makes sense 🙂
